Those who
cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat
it, and this is especially true for those who
use Oracle Discoverer and Oracle data mining for
analyzing historical data and identifying
significant correlations. Oracle professionals
are now applying the techniques of predictive
modeling to Oracle performance data and using
the gold mine of information in STATSPACK and
AWR to develop Oracle tuning models.
This paper will examine the types of data
stored inside STATSPACK and AWR and examine
techniques for trend identification and
predictive modeling. Using these techniques
Oracle professionals remove the guesswork from
change to the Oracle instance and provide a
framework for gathering evidence to justify
database changes.
This is an indispensable presentation for any
Oracle developer and DBA who assumes
responsibility for making system-wide Oracle
database changes

Oracle 10g has
greatly improved the wait event information in
Oracle10g, providing the Oracle professional
with an unparalleled opportunity for detecting
and correct database bottlenecks. This
presentation will show the internal structures
of the ASH tables and highlight the important
wait events within the tables. The attendee will
see simple scripts for identifying the top wait
events over time, and see how to quickly
drill-down to find the cause of the bottleneck.
Best of all, this presentation will show how
to perform time-series wait event analysis.
Oracle bottlenecks are very transient and unique
combinations of events create unique
bottlenecks. This paper shows working scripts
that are used in real-world Oracle 10g databases
to detect repeating patterns of bottlenecks and
show hidden events that are often too transient
to see with real-time monitors. This
presentation is indispensable for the Oracle

always been very predictable and this
presentation will explore Oracle’s long-term
commitment to improving Oracle in the 21st
Century. Combining Oracle new features with
changes in technology, this dynamic presentation
will explore how Oracle will change in the next
decade. The presentation will explore the new
technology movements such as server
consolidation, the death of client-server and
the new solid-state storage systems. We will
also explore the new Oracle features and examine
Oracle’s progress in automation, management and
monitoring.
We will examine the use of artificial

This
presentation will explain the why and how of
using regular expression with Oracle. Unix SAs
know the power of matching with regular
expression and now the Oracle DBA and Developer
can put that power to use. But regular
expressions are not the only (of even the best)
answer in all situations. We will cover your
regular expression options in SQL, PL/SQL and
Java. While most DBAs do not use Java, it does
provide a rich and powerful regular expressions
capabilities that SQL and PL/SQL do not have.
Improper use of regular expression can have a
large negative impact on database performance.
The presentation will explain the pros and cons
of each method and when they can best be
utilized to provide you with high performance
matching capability. |

Oracle
Database 10g has been officially launched to the
public at the beginning of 2004 with a variety
of novel architecture changes over its previous
versions. It is the most complex and powerful
database ever created among competing database
technologies. So why are companies not fully
utilizing the improved features and benefits by
upgrading their databases to Oracle Database
10g? This paper will analyze the issues haunting
the upgrade to the new release and tested
strategies to mitigate the risks involved in the
upgrade process. This paper will also cover the
various steps involved in upgrading previous
versions of Oracle databases as well as
migrating from other database vendors to Oracle
Database 10g.

Oracle
Database 10g has been built with utilities aimed
solely at automating and simplifying routine
database management tasks. The database has a
built-in sophisticated self-management
infrastructure to know more about its operation
and provide solutions to avoid any potential
problem during its operation. This is
accomplished through various server components,
which collects statistics automatically and
provide feedback about resource utilization and
performance. Using these advisors in Oracle
Database 10g, the DBA can get a better insight
about the database and its sub-components. This
paper will give detailed knowledge on making the
most of database advisors, insights on their
operation, and optimize the time spent on
performance tuning and maintenance efforts.

Oracle
Database 10g, next-generation database, is the
industry's first designed for grid computing.
Grid computing reduces the cost of IT by
clustering servers together to act as a single
large computer, dynamically shifting server
resources between applications on demand. Daniel
Liu, the co-author of Oracle 10g New Features
for the DBA by Rampant TechPress, will introduce
the new features in Oracle Database 10g Release
1&2. Those topics include: new initialization
parameters, Automatic Storage Management (ASM),
Cross Platform Transportable tablespaces, new
SYSAUX tablespace, high-speed Data Pump utility,
extended Flashback functions, RMAN enhancements,
Column-level Virtual Private Database (VPD),
database tuning and performance improvement,
high availability improvements in Real
Application Clusters (RAC), Data Guard, Oracle
Streams, and more. The topics covered in this
seminar are primary for the database
administrators. |

Abstract: |
Most DBAs are so
absorbed in the day to day administration of the
database that they tend to overlook some of the most
imprtant elements - security being one. With today's
environment with myriads of laws and regulations,
security is not just a nice-to-have anymore, it's a
requirement. So, how do you plan for a secure database
infrastructure without being overwhelmed?
This calls for a phased approach. This session will
show that tasks can be broken into four phases - done in
a day, in a week, in a month and finally six months. At
the end of each period, you will have accomplished
almost everything that is needed for an acpetablly
secured database. The attendees will learn from small
matters such as the permission flags of the oracle
executable to advanced topics like Virtual Private
Database. Special emphasis will be placed on regulations
such as HIPAA, SOX and GLBA. The courseware will include
tear-away cheatsheets to help the attendees remember
exactly what to do. |

Oracle has
provided the ASM (automatic storage management)

While many of us were on sidelines and began
wondering if it is viable alternative for the
traditional file systems, 10gR2 has added some
more functionality with the release of command

ASM is here to stay.
This session discusses ASM role and utility.
Especially for RAC implementation, think ASM as
