This book is specifically designed for the
English speaking traveler who wants to safely explore South
America. In each destination we have located insiders who can give
you the “scoop” on the best places to see, the best restaurants and
the best places to stay, all designed to provide you with a
world-class adventure.
Note: For the purposes of his book we adopt
general conventions and refer to residents of the United States of
America as “Americans”. The authors are aware that many South
Americans believe that there are only six continents (with North
America and South America combined) and the authors are aware that
the people of South America consider themselves to be Americans.
This is not a book about South American
History, nature or archaeology. Rather, this book focused on having
fun, understanding the local cultures and having true adventures
without being at-risk.
With the rampant anti-American sentiments and
artificial devaluation of the US dollar in Europe, thousands of
travelers are shunning Europe in favor of the southern hemisphere of
the Americas. A land of vast expanses, contrasts and
contradictions, South America remains one of the best undiscovered
treasures for the American traveler.
Safety First
Historically, American travelers have been
afraid to travel to South America, fearing the desperate poverty,
civil unrest and unsafe roads and lack of overall safety.
Note: Some South American countries remain
dangerous for Americans, and this book deliberately omits those
countries where the Government is unstable or has expressed
anti-American sentiments. Pursuant to warnings and advisories by
the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), we have omitted Colombia,
Venezuela and Guiana because they may not be safe for American
tourists.
Also note that tourists under the dominion of
Great Britain (England, Scotland, Canada and Australia) may not be
welcomed in Argentina, as anti-English sentiments remain high after
the British kills hundreds of Argentinean military during Argentinas
failed invasion of the Falkland Islands.
Even in 2007, Americans are targeted for
kidnapping, murder and abduction. In 2006, some Americans died during a excursion
into the Chilean Andes while stopping in Arica Chile on a cruise
ship.
All governments in South America can be
unstable, and you should always have an exit strategy in-place,
including Quito. Always locate the U.S. Embassy on your city
map and be prepared to walk to the US embassy in case of civil
unrest or strikes.
