TNS-04612: Null RHS Error

Expert Oracle Tips by Kamran Agayev A.

March 31, 2011

By Kamran Agayev A.

I was creating a database using DBCA, and I received some TNS errors.

Specifically, I got a TNS-04414: File error which was caused by: TNS-04612: Null RHS for “….” error as shown below:

The space between the quotation marks included a TNS entry that was recently added. The TNS entry was tested using TNSPING utility and succeeded.

The error was still caused by this entry as it was added manually, and it seems that the DBCA is for some reason not able in this step to read or understand the entry.

Anyway, to resolve the problem, I took the backup of the tnsnames.ora file, deleted that entry and tried to create the database again, and it worked. After that, I reverted the tnsnames back.
